q dot Shoe 1

This was my first attempt at the design and construction of a shoe. The upper of this shoe is made entirely from natural materials and therefore completely compostable. The only parts of the shoe which cant be composted are a layer of EVA foam which lies inside the sole and the soling material its self may contain some plasticides, but it is gum rubber, more research would be needed to find out exactly. There were lots of mistakes made in making this shoe, and it was more of an exploration of how shoes are made than an actual shoe, I learnt a huge amount from the experiance. This was an out-stitched or weltschoen construction shoe, and i actually sewed the sole to the upper through the mid sole/innersole and through the upper. It was made on a last which i made with water based clay (un fired, just dried) and covered with papier-mâché, as a result the clay shrunk too much when drying and the last was a bit too small for my foot/shoe size.
